SIM's 12th edition will take place in the lovely Romanian university town of Timišoara, whose character and history will enhance interaction among participants, as well as provide an enjoyable setting for the convention.

The conference wishes to bring together researchers and students in an effort to discuss the latest challenges and innovations related to the field of management, and aims to address specific questions, such as the role of organisations in the economic system, the innovation process as key element, or the role of innovation in the organizations' dynamics.

We are living during a highly interesting period of the human civilization. It is for the second time in the known history of humanity that we, as human beings, are going through a period of fundamental challenges and changes of the way we live, work and develop as individuals, groups, nations, and as humankind.

The first event which brought about unprecedented changes was the industrial revolution, which took place during the 18th and 19th centuries. This lead to the emergence of a great innovation, and gradually transformed the world of organizations. Its name is "Management" and the concept of the modern bureaucratic organization. It successfully solved several major challenges faced by 19th and 20th century organizations, and it became universally accepted.

Nowadays, it is more and more evident that 20th century management is no longer ensuring the effective and efficient functioning of organizations. The question is why? New challenges arise for 21st century organizations - either business, for profit organizations, public organizations, and third sector, or hybrid organizations. The main challenges are the increasingly accelerating technological and social changes, the development of ITC and of Web 2.0., hyper and global competition, knowledge leveling, as well as the heightened responsibility of managers and leaders. In addition, there is a seismic shift in workplace expectations - in the relationship between the individual and the organization.

Humankind expects organizations, academics, and management professionals to make an active contribution to solving the numerous problems our planet is facing: ecological sustainability, environment destruction as a negative result of human activity, social justice, universal growth of the gap between rich and poor, physical wellbeing in connection with pollution, increasing human stress, as well as increasing interest in spirituality in all the spheres of life, including in the workplace.

Academics, consultants and practitioners/managers are concerned with innovating management itself. They are exploring new managerial principles, methods, techniques and instruments, with the aim of finding innovative solutions to the complex challenges of the 21st century. This endeavor is also known as Management 2.0. (www.managementexchange.com).

SIM 2013 aims to create an environment suitable for presenting and discussing research papers from academics, researchers, and practitioners related to the issues presented above. Therefore, we invite and welcome everyone willing to share their results, experiences and methods, to submit their work and actively participate in SIM 2013.
