“Water is a challenge for the century” is the motto of the IWA 11th International Specialised Conference on Watershed and River Basin Management. Its goal is to promote the understanding, utilization, and benefits of integrated watershed management approaches for the beneficial and sustainable use of rivers and watershed worldwide.

The conference seeks to achieve this by the sharing of expertise and experience among IWA members and with other interested individuals and organisations. Out of 180 abstracts submitted to the conference, the Programme Committee selected a set of superior oral and poster presentations whose choice will guarantee a programme of outstanding quality.

The technical programme will be preceded by two keynote speeches discussing challenges in international river basin management focusing on Danube and significance of soil in watershed management. The third invited keynote presentation will take place on the occasion of conference dinner at the Hungarian National Academy of Sciences.

Main topics of the technical presentations include water resources management, climate change, pollution sources and controls, and monitoring and modelling on river basin scale.

The conference in Budapest is an ideal opportunity to learn about new scientific developments that can improve our understanding of the interactions among economic and ecological drivers, constrains and pressures, resource status, environmental impacts and system responses. It is also an opportunity to discuss political and organisational attempts to deal with water issues, and to raise awareness of several as-yet unanswered questions, all on watershed scale.

The conference will bring together authors of the papers for oral and poster presentations from 30 countries, composed of current and future leaders in the fields of water resources and demand management, monitoring and data analysis, river basin modelling, impact of climate change on water resources, sustainable urban drainage management, diffuse pollution sources, stakeholder involvement and pubic participation, developing and maintaining watershed management programmes.

For all of these reasons, on behalf of Watershed and River Basin Management Specialists Group of IWA we warmly invite you to join us from 4-5 September 2008 in Budapest, Hungary for the IWA 11th International Specialised Conference on Watershed and River Basin Management.
